History of Hurricanes in Belize
Belize has been punished by several hurricanes in the last two decades so knowing what type of weather is developing before you arrive is important. Hurricane season opens June 1st and continues until November 30th. In the last two decades, there have been 8 Category 1 or above hurricanes that have hit Belize.
2016 – Aug 1st Hurricane Earl – Category 1 – destroyed 74% of the docks and piers along with the businesses that were located on them. Minor damage was done elsewhere.
2010 – Oct 24th Hurricane Richard – Category 1 – Hit southern Belize and came through Belmopan destroying many homes in small villages, – Sept 15th Hurricane Karl – Hit northern Belize on the Mexican border eventually achieving a Category 3, and June 26th Hurricane Alex – Category 1 – Northern Belize caused a lot of flooding.
2007 – Aug 21st Hurricane Dean – Category 5 – Aimed for northern Belize like a rocket and left 2,000 people homeless with $100 million USD in property damages.
2001 – Oct 8th Hurricane Iris – Category 4 – Hit southern Belize at Placencia where it damaged 95% of the structures. Over 3,700 homes were destroyed.
2000 – Oct 2nd Hurricane Keith – Category 4 – Hit Ambergris Caye after significantly weakening and caused mostly flooding before moving to the mainland and causing more flooding.
1998 – Oct 29th Hurricane Mitch – Category 5 – Covered the entire country once it had weakened and caused massive flooding. Was first hurricane or tropical storm to hit in last 18 years, since 1980.
